OK, not yet. I'm just fantasizing. The alternative is just too unbearable for me to think about.

Just came across this interesting article by Deepak Chopra commenting on the differences between Obama and Palin.
Chopra suggests that Palin is a reactionary opposite to Obama's call for progressive change. Either way, can I wake up now...this isn't actually happening is it?

And whilst I'm on the subject, check out this great snippet - Damon does a great job of summing it up:

However, until we are able to produce zero waste, that is, all of our waste being perfectly recyclable, we have not reached an ecologically sane and sustainable stage of culture in regards to waste management.

Here are links to two articles about zero waste:

LED's can provide an affordable and swift means of developing the living standards of many Africans and populations in other Third world countries.

From the article:
"The number of people without adequate light is greater than the entire world population when Edison invented the light bulb."

"There are 1.7 billion impoverished people worldwide who burn kerosene for light. Fuel for this purpose costs $40 billion and emits 200 million tons of greenhouse gases per yearԗequivalent to the emissions from 30 million cars. While Americans spend a fraction of their income on light, people in the developing world devote 10 to 15 percent of theirs to itfor little return. Fuel lamps account for 17 percent of global lighting costs but provide less than one-tenth of one percent of global light output."

Twenty of those acres will be reserved for the experimental production of a renewable JP8 jet-fuel.

Australia Plans Carbon Storage Under Ocean

Australia is planning to store greenhouse gas emissions under the ocean at a number of sites around the continent.

This kind of action is a direct result of Australia's Labor government, elected in November 2007, ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, reversing an 11-year policy by the previous conservative government.

Scientists get sued in advance for the end of the world

You may have heard about the the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, that is being constructed underneath about half of Europe (er..OK, France and Switzerland). When it is finished it will be the world's biggest particle collider and be able to do all sorts of interesting new things. For example - it will be able to create mini black holes. For a long time now there has been real concern amongst some physicists, futurists and members of the public that this machine could literally create a runaway black hole that would swallow the entire planet amongst other unimaginable accidents.

Last week a lawsuit was filed in Hawaii's U.S. District Court. The suit calls on the U.S. Department of Energy, Fermilab, the National Science Foundation and CERN to ease up on their LHC preparations for several months while the collider's safety was reassessed. Representatives at Fermilab in Illinois and at Europe's CERN laboratory, two of the defendants in the case, say there's no chance that the Large Hadron Collider would cause such cosmic catastrophes.

Solar to provide all power within 20 years?

According to Ray Kurzweil, yes. Kurzweil believes that Solar technology is an information technology and thus subject to his Law of Accelerating Returns. He has based his predictions on continued exponential growth in this field.

His statement come from a panel that was convened by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to make bold predictions about the "grand engineering challenges" of the 21st century. See this related article.

New Scientist reports on a US Report recommending urgent actiosn to stop smuggling of ingredients for Nuclear Weapons:
"Since 1992, security officials around the world have confiscated weapons-grade uranium or plutonium a total of 16 times. In each case, the amount of radioactive materials was never more than about 100 grams, far short of the 8 kilograms or more needed to make a nuclear bomb, yet these events are still a cause for grave concern."

Sumatran Tigers Are Being Sold Into Extinction

Because of poor enforcement the Sumatran tiger is slipping through our fingers,Ӕ said Leigh Henry, program officer for TRAFFIC North America. There are only about 400 Sumatran tigers left and such a small population canӒt sustain this level of poaching. If enforcement and political will are not bolstered the Sumatran tiger will be wiped out just as the Javan and Bali tigers were.

Not sure I really like looking on the bright side of nuclear power generation, but all the same this is an educational read. Despite these 10 optimistic points, it just seems the more reactors we have the greater the changes of something like Cherenobyl happening again. The thought of anything like that happening in central Europe is truly terrifying.
