Francis Drake came up with his famous equation for a meeting with some astronomers in 1961. This simple equation has given many hope that the development of other civilisations in the cosmos is very possible. When Frank Drake and his compatriots plugged their best guesses into the equation, they came up with an answer that indicated there should be a civilization within about 1,000 light-years of Earth.
